Barbara Ellen Files Laughlin of Bay View Drive died Monday in a Gorham health-care center after an extended illness.
Born in Westbrook, a daughter of Ernest W. and Mabel B. Haskell Files, she attended Waynflete School, graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in 1935, from Katharine Gibbs School with a certificate in 1937 and from the former Peabody Law School, Portland, in 1941. She was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1941.
Mrs. Laughlin was a member of the Cumberland Bar Association, a former president of Western Maine Wellesley Club, a former president of the Junior League of Portland, a member of the Child and Family Services board and a former president of the Portland YWCA. She also was a vestrywoman of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, clerk and directress of the Altar Guild and a member of the Thursday Group.
Mrs. Laughlin was a volunteer at Maine General Hospital and later Maine Medical Center, worked on the cancer and Red Cross blood drives, and was involved with the Maine Audubon Society here and the Memorial Library.
Surviving are three sons, Kent A. of Kent, Del., Jeffrey S. of Saco and Gary B. Laughlin of North Yarmouth; and four grandchildren.
