Jean Marie (Howe) Spengler, 80, Scarborough, Maine, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, Maine and St. Augustine, Fla., died peacefully at Bay Square, Yarmouth, Maine on July 31, 2007.
She was born on Sept. 29, 1926 in Milton, Mass., the daughter of Malcolm and Margaret Howe.
She grew up in Bucksport and South Portland, Maine and attended Chamberlain School in Boston where she studied art. Although she spent many years as a homemaker, she also worked professionally as a draftsperson. Jean loved animals, especially cats, nature, and the ocean. She was an accomplished artist, musician and square dancer. While living in St. Augustine she volunteered for several animal rescue organizations and worked to preserve local wilderness areas.
Her first husband, Charles Tucker of Falmouth, Maine, and her second husband of more than 30 years, Fred Spengler of Cape Elizabeth and St. Augustine, predeceased Jean. V
She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, Stephen, Karen, and Emily Tucker of Old Orchard Beach, and her daughter, Susan Tucker of Woodbridge, Va., her stepson and stepdaughter, Richard and Karen Spengler both of Minneapolis, Minn. She is also survived her brother, Robert Howe and his wife Alice, of Phoenix, Ariz., a sister, Virginia Phillips, of Canyon City, Colo., and predeceased by her sister, Catherine Campfield. Jean has many beloved nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
