MONONA - Verna Hoiby Sprengle, age 85, of Monona, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2005, at Karmenta Center. She was born on Aug. 6, 1919, in Edgerton, to Lars and Lena (Hippe) Hoiby.
Verna married Russell R. Sprengle Jr. on Jan. 4, 1947, in Indio, Calif., in Riverside County.
She graduated from Edgerton High School in 1937, and Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School (Rush) in 1941. In 1943, Verna was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps and served overseas for 16 months on Guam as a lieutenant (jg) with Fleet Hospital 115. She later served as the superintendent of nurses at the Indio Hospital in California, and the administrator at the Edgerton Community Hospital.
Verna retired from her working career as a claims inspector for Wisconsin Physicians Service after 16 years of service. In retirement, she and her husband were long time members of the Wisconsin Goodsam and Winnebago RV Clubs, and enjoyed traveling all over North America. Verna was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7591 in Madison.
She is survived by her husband, Russell; son, Eric (fiancee, Marsha); sister-in-law, Jerrylee Rutherford; nieces, Sandy Kahl, Linda Swenson, Bonnie Prestbroten, Diane Wagner, Karen Ogilvie, Carol Rudolf, Kathryn Snyder, Cindy Collier, and Jo Ellen Lampos; and nephews, Eddie and Danny Sprengle, Christopher Snyder, and Kurt, Glen, and Todd Rutherford.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Shelly Sprengle; brother, S. Leander Hoiby; sisters, Floy Feggested, Lydia Gessert, Harriet Klongland, and Charlotte Clark; brother-in-law, Kermit Sprengle; and sister-in-law, Sharon Snyder.
