HOLLIS - Edith Barnes Haskell, 88, formerly of Main Street, Hollis, died on Dec. 23, 2004 at The Gorham House.She was born in Boston, Mass., on June 8, 1916, the daughter of Walter and Blanche (Files) Barnes. At the age of 5, she moved to Hollis, where she called home for the rest of her life.
She attended Hollis schools and married her husband, Howard J. Haskell in 1932.During World War II, she worked as a civilian aircraft spotter. In addition to being a homemaker, she assisted her husband in clerical duties at H.J. & D.L. Haskell Lumber Co. During their retirement years, Edith and Howard traveled in the U.S., Canada and other countries including Russia, Morocco, England, and other European countries.She was a member of Hollis Center Baptist Church, a charter member of the Saco Valley Civic Association, Ladies Aide and the Farm Bureau many years ago.
Her husband, Howard Sr. (57 years of marriage) died in 1989; a son, Howard J. Haskell Jr., died in 1993; and two brothers, Paul and Everett Barnes predeceased her.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan H. Thompson and her husband, Gene of Hollis; two grandchildren, Peter W. Thompson and his wife, Mary and Eric W. Thompson and his wife, Sally; and five great- grandchildren.
